SAET Database Rights and Terms of Use

The St Andrews Encyclopaedia of Theology (SAET) is an edited, open access work. SAET articles are regularly revised. Pursuant to database rights in the United Kingdom there are certain limitations on what an individual user can reproduce.

  1. User Rights. The SAET is a database hosted in the United Kingdom. The individual user (User) is permitted to extract and reuse insubstantial parts of the database for any purpose. The SAET has the right to object to substantial reuse and distribution in the manner described below.
  2. Database Rights.
    1. A User may electronically access the SAET on any device.
    2. A User may make use of the database for computational analysis (including text mining) subject to reasonable network usage constraints.
    3. The SAET considers a single article, used and referenced consistent with its CC BY-NC license, to be an insubstantial part of the database.
    4. The CC BY-NC license requires that any use be accompanied by appropriate citation and that the use be non-commercial in nature.
    5. A User may reuse and distribute insubstantial parts of the database for any purpose, consistent with the CC BY-NC license. This includes but is not limited to quotations of reasonable size in electronic or physical media or links to articles in electronic or physical media.
    6. A User may not reuse or distribute substantial parts of the database for any purpose without the express consent of the SAET Managing Editor and/or the author(s) of the article(s) the User intends to reuse or distribute in either electronic or physical media.
  3. Educational Uses Policy. The SAET encourages the use of our database and its content for educational purposes. A User has free access to the database for any purpose. Per our database rights no permission needs to be sought to reproduce insubstantial parts of the database in electronic or physical media. The SAET permits, without objection, links to substantial parts of the database in electronic or physical media. If for any reason the User wants to reproduce substantial parts of the database in either electronic or physical media they must seek permission from the SAET Managing Editor and/or the author(s) of the article(s) to be substantially reproduced.
    1. If, for example, you wish to use a quotation from a SAET article in an academic article, essay, or presentation, or a single article consistent with the CC BY-NC license, you may do so without seeking permission.
    2. If you wish to reproduce more than one article as part of printed course materials or as an electronic or physical document for circulation you must request permission from the SAET Managing Editor and appropriate author(s).
  4. General. The SAET staff, editors, authors, affiliated funding bodies, and students are not liable for any damages incurred as a result of the use of the database. No warranty is provided as to the availability, stability, security, or accuracy of the SAET database or its website. The database rights presented in these terms are described in UK law and any objection to infringement of them will be made in that jurisdiction.
  5. If you are in any doubt as to whether your intended use of our database may be in breach of these Database Rights and Terms of Use, you should contact the SAET via:
