Knowledge, Culture, and Spirituality in the Islamic Civilization
Presentation and discussion with Dr Khairudin Aljunied followed by a reception.
The St Andrews Encyclopaedia of Theology is pleased to welcome Dr Khairudin Aljunied from National University of Singapore to speak on the topic of ‘Knowledge, Culture, and Spirituality in the Islamic Civilization' on Wednesday 1st May 2024 at 4:30pm in the Senate Room, Parliament Building, University of St Andrews.
The Islamic Civilization was, for many centuries, the hub of intellectualism and a nerve center for spiritual wayfarers and aspirants. From Makkah to Melaka, Sufis and scholars established colleges and lodges designed to deepen learners' understanding of the divine and cosmos. This lecture provides a critical survey of the intersections between the cultures of learning and deep piety in the long history of the Islamic Civilization. I show that theology, law, philosophy, and Sufism (tasawwuf) were key subjects taught in Islamic institutions that attracted both Muslims and non-Muslims to pursue their scholarly and spiritual ends. These institutions inspired the growth of scholarly cultures in the West and their traces are still evident till this day.
All are welcome. RSVPs via email would be appreciated but are not required if you wish to attend on the day.
A short reception will follow.
