Talk abstract: The word ‘abstract’ has become misconstrued as denoting a departure from reality, while in fact its original meaning is to draw out and manifest the essence of what exists. This talk explores how the Orthodox icon tradition uses techniques of abstraction to manifest a profound worldview, and also how this worldview was a formative inspiration for the founders of modern abstractionism, most notably Kandinsky, Brancusi, and Stravinsky.
